Behavioral support

Many children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) struggle at times with behavior due to issues such as sensory integration, inability to understand social situations and general anxiety. The following resources are designed to help caregivers and professionals develop strategies to address negative behaviors and increase positive ones.

Resources

  • The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities provides comprehensive resources on behavior assessment, plans and positive supports.
  • Autism-help.org offers a variety of articles designed to help with behavioral issues and learn life skills.
  • The National Autistic Society (United Kingdom) includes webpages related to understanding behavior.
  • Education.com provides guidance on "Positive Behavior Support: Assisting Families with Behavioral Strategies in Home and Community Settings," in an article written by Dr. Glen Dunlap.
  • Education.com provides an article, "Looking Beyond Behavior: Schoolwide Discipline and Individual Supports for Students with ASD," with related articles on this same webpage.
  • Autismtoday.com includes an article written by Dr. Lori Ernsperger titled "Developing Proactive Strategies for Managing Problem Behaviors."
  • The Center for Effective Collaboration and Practice presents numerous free briefs on evidence-based interventions to improve behavior at home and school. While not targeted specifically to children with disabilities, many still may be helpful to parents and educators.
  • "Comprehensive Lifestyle Support for Adults with Challenging Behavior:  From Rhetoric to Reality," (PDF format) is an article by Ann and Rud Turnbull.
